The system covers the operational requirements for accommodation in Canada: tourism levy / Municipal Accommodation Tax per province and city, GST/HST/PST combined rates, short-term rental registration and bilingual (EN/FR) requirements in Quebec.
Tourism levy / Municipal Accommodation Tax (MAT)
Each province and municipality sets its own accommodation tax: British Columbia MRDT 3% (Vancouver, Victoria, Whistler) + PST 8% on lodging, Alberta Tourism Levy 4%, Ontario MAT 4% (Toronto, Ottawa, Niagara Falls, Mississauga, Hamilton), Quebec Tax on Lodging 3,5% (Montreal, Quebec City, Mont-Tremblant), Nova Scotia MAL 2% (Halifax), New Brunswick (Saint John, Moncton), Newfoundland (St. John's). Vezpa applies the correct combined rate, exempts long-stay (over 30 days in most provinces), and groups for the monthly remittance to the appropriate authority.
GST / HST / PST — combined sales tax
Federal GST 5% applies everywhere. Harmonized HST in Ontario 13%, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, PEI and Newfoundland 15%. Quebec QST 9,975% added to GST = 14,975% combined. British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba have separate PST. Alberta only GST 5%. Vezpa detects the correct combination by property location, applies it to accommodation and ancillary services, and produces reports compatible with QuickBooks, Sage 50, Xero for CRA filings.
Short-term rental registration (provincial & municipal)
British Columbia now requires provincial STR registration (since 2024). Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, Ottawa, Halifax and others have municipal STR permits with caps on rentable nights and principal-residence requirements. Quebec requires a CITQ classification number for all tourism accommodations. Vezpa stores license numbers, expiry dates, surfaces them on confirmation emails and OTA listings (mandatory by law in most jurisdictions), and reminds you ahead of renewal.
Bilingual operations in Québec (Loi 96)
Bill 96 requires all customer-facing communication in Quebec to be available in French. Vezpa supports French-language confirmation emails, invoices, online check-in flow and self-service guest interface — with English fallback. Property profile stores Quebec-specific data: CITQ number, NEQ (Numéro d'entreprise du Québec), bilingual property name and amenities descriptions.
